Globally, in the 16-24 age segment, GWI sees a 3% decrease in the use of webmail from 70% in wave 1 to 67% in wave 3. In the same period, Social networking grew from 49% to 59%.

Interesting - digital paper will be key. Also depends much on the commercial push. If there are significant revenues in moving readers from physical paper to a digital format it will happen. This means getting the advertising model right in digital formats. Currently through browsers, this is broken and will never fund the media industry.

The Pew Research Center reports an overall 41% of people in the USA who cite the internet as their primary source of information. Our data confirm this and not only for the USA. Overall, in the 18 countries of our survey, an average of 37% respondents say the internet is their primary source of information. 4% specifically citing “social network updates”. The world is changing.
